Some Yale professors are raising the stakes of weight loss, literally: They’re starting a company that invites people to bet on their weight loss. If they forfeit their “commitment bond” by failing to lose, the money goes to charity.
Hey profs! Yoohoo, are you listening? The Flying Trapeze has an idea for you, if you really want to help people lose weight. Forget this silly charity thing. If dieters know their money will go to a good cause, it’s a win-win scenario from the get-go. It may even be a disincentive to lose. I mean, think about it: “Either my waistline shrinks, or Guatamalan orphans eat. Hmmn.”
Here’s what you should do: Threaten to do something hideous with their money, like fund a terrorist outfit, raze a swath of rainforest, blow up some babies, or heck, give it to the U.S. government in case their Guantanamo fund comes up short. Hello, incentive!
Or you could just stick with your gimmicky charity fundraiser. Whatever.

Wow, I totally agree–how about changing it to, for every pound you lose, they donate money to charity–that’s win-win to me!
