Yoga, Conscious Eating, and Indian Quacks

Check out this article on “eating to support your yoga” in Yoga Journal. If the sections on ayurvedic eating and fasting (they give fasting a thumbs-down) bore you, skip straight to the “conscious eating” section.

Regarding ayurveda: I don’t put much stock in it, although to be honest I never really tried it. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian health care system, does have one great insight sorely lacking in most Western health recommendations: It recognizes each body is unique, and that what constitutes a “healthy diet” varies widely from individual to individual.

Ayurveda says that we’re each a unique combination of four body types. The combination of types determines how you should eat. Unfortunately, when I took the test years ago, my results were fuzzy (seemed like I was all four types), and the one type I seemed to lean toward slightly suggested that I should rarely eat tomatoes. Thus ended my relationship with ayurveda. I love tomatoes.

Maybe I’ll do a two-week experiment trial though, just for fun?
